Flexible Sigmoidoscopy FAQs

What is a flexible sigmoidoscopy and why might I need it?

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the large bowel (colon), using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera. A sigmoidoscopy uses an endoscope to look at the lining of the lower part of your large bowel. This helps us to diagnose any symptoms you have, or check your existing bowel condition.

You can ask your GP to refer you to Royal Devon Private Healthcare.

You will be asked to not eat or drink for six to eight hours before the procedure and follow a special diet for a day or two, including a laxative to empty your colon. Your doctor will review your medications, especially blood thinners, and advise on any adjustments. Wearing comfortable clothing and arranging for someone to accompany you home is important.

During the flexible sigmoidoscopy, you’ll lie on your side while the endoscopist gently passes the thin, flexible tube through your anus (bottom) and around your lower colon. The camera allows them to examine the lining of your bowel for any abnormalities. Small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken for testing, and small growths (polyps) can be removed painlessly. A proctoscope may also be used to check or treat piles (haemorrhoids) if needed. Most people go home the same day.

Sedation is available to help you relax and stay comfortable during the procedure. Most people feel little or no pain, though you may notice mild bloating, cramping, or pressure while the tube moves through your bowel. Any discomfort usually passes shortly after the test.

If you have had sedation, driving is not recommended. You must have someone over 18 to take you home and stay with you overnight. If no sedation is used, your doctor will advise whether it is safe to drive.
