What's included

One-to-one consultation

You’ll meet with one of our leading orthopaedic consultants to discuss your condition and treatment options. They will talk you through the procedure, discuss your x-rays and verify your diagnosis.

Surgery scheduling

Our private patients booking team will discuss available surgery dates with you and make a provisional booking.

Pre-assessment

Our experienced nursing team at the Nightingale Hospital Exeter will carry out your pre-assessment for surgery. This might include heart scans, blood tests, extra scans or x-rays as required and a review with an anaesthetist to ensure that you are safe to proceed to surgery. The team will also help you get prepared and provide all of the information that you need.

Surgery

Your surgery will take place at the Nightingale Hospital Exeter. After a brief period of recovery, around 60% of patients are able to return home the same day although overnight care is included in the package.

Follow up and physiotherapy

At 2 weeks, a nurse will carry out checks to make sure that you are healing well and at 6 weeks you will have a follow up meeting with your surgeon and a physiotherapist. Your physiotherapist will provide a patient centred plan that supports your continued recovery, along with up to 3 physiotherapy appointments to support your progress and recovery.

Recovery

Recovery rates for knee replacement surgery are very good. There is an optional final appointment with your consultant 6 – 12 months after surgery. These are rarely needed.

Exact costs depend on clinical need and will be confirmed in a personalised quote after consultation.

Total Knee Replacement FAQs

What is a private total knee replacement?

Choosing private knee surgery at Royal Devon Private Healthcare allows patients to access treatment faster, select their consultant surgeon, and benefit from personalised care with the reassurance that all profits are reinvested back into the NHS.

Yes, most private medical insurance policies cover total knee replacement surgery. Major insurers are accepted by Royal Devon Private Healthcare. For more details please visit our payment and finance options. Patients should confirm policy details with their insurer to check what is included, such as scans, consultant fees, and post-operative physiotherapy.

Private patients in the UK usually have knee replacement surgery within a few weeks of their initial consultation. This faster access helps patients reduce pain, improve mobility, and return to everyday activities sooner.

Private knee replacement surgery is performed by our highly experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in knee and joint replacement procedures. Patients benefit from continuity of care with their chosen consultant throughout the treatment journey.

Private patients have access to a wide range of advanced knee implants, including total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, and customised implants. Your consultant will recommend the best option based on your age, lifestyle, and activity level.

Most patients begin walking with support within 24–48 hours after surgery. Full recovery takes around 10–12 weeks, depending on physiotherapy and individual progress. Private patients may benefit from more intensive rehabilitation for quicker recovery.
