What's included

One to one consultation

You’ll meet with one of our leading orthopaedic consultants to discuss your condition and treatment options. They will talk you through the procedure, discuss your x-rays and verify your diagnosis.

Surgery scheduling

Our private patients booking team will discuss available surgery dates with you and make a provisional booking.

Pre-assessment

Our experienced nursing team at the Nightingale Hospital Exeter [link] will carry out your pre-assessment for surgery. This might include heart scans, blood tests, extra scans or x-rays as required and a review with an anaesthetist to ensure that you are safe to proceed to surgery. The team will also help you get prepared and provide all of the information that you need.

Surgery

Your surgery will take place at the Nightingale Hospital Exeter. After a brief period of recovery, around 60% of patients choose to return home the same day although a one-night stay is included in the package.

Follow up and physiotherapy

At 2 weeks, a practice nurse will carry out checks to make sure that you are healing well and at 6 weeks you will have a follow up meeting with your surgeon and a physiotherapist. Your physiotherapist will provide a plan that supports your continued recovery along with between 6 and 10 physiotherapy appointments to support your progress.

Recovery rates for ACL surgery are very good.

There is an optional final appointment with your consultant 6 – 12 months after surgery. These are rarely needed.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) FAQs

What is ACL surgery?

ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery is an orthopaedic procedure to reconstruct or repair a torn ligament in the knee. It is commonly performed after sports injuries or accidents that cause instability in the knee joint. Our private ACL surgery in the UK offers faster access to treatment, consultant-led care, and personalised rehabilitation.

Yes, most private health insurance providers cover ACL surgery if it is medically necessary. Patients should confirm their policy details to check coverage for consultations, scans, surgery, and physiotherapy.

Private ACL patients in the UK can often have surgery within a few weeks of diagnosis. Early access helps prevent further knee damage and supports faster recovery.

Private ACL surgery is performed by our expert consultant orthopaedic surgeons specialising in sports injuries and knee surgery. Patients benefit from choosing their surgeon and receiving personalised treatment throughout their care.

The most common type is ACL reconstruction, where the torn ligament is replaced with a graft (often taken from the patient’s hamstring or patellar tendon). In some cases, ACL repair may be possible, especially for partial tears. Your surgeon will recommend the best option based on your injury and activity level.

Recovery after ACL surgery varies, but most patients can walk with support within a few days and return to normal activities in 6–9 months. Athletes may require up to 12 months before returning to high-level sport. Physiotherapy is crucial for regaining strength and stability.

You can book directly with us or request a referral from your GP to an orthopaedic consultant. We  have a dedicated private patient team who can provide cost information, arrange consultations, and support you throughout your treatment journey.
