Cardiac MRI FAQs
What is a Cardiac MRI?
A cardiac MRI is a type of scan that uses magnetic resonance imaging to capture highly detailed pictures of your heart. It allows doctors to assess the size, shape, and function of your heart chambers, valves, and blood vessels without surgery or X-rays.
Why might I need a Cardiac MRI?
You may be referred for a cardiac MRI if you have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or unexplained fainting. It is also used to investigate heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), inflammation, congenital heart problems, scarring from previous heart attacks, or heart valve disease.
What type of cardiac MRI will I need?
There are two main types of cardiac MRI. A viability scan looks at how well the heart muscle is working and whether it has been damaged, for example after a heart attack. A stress cardiac MRI uses medication to gently mimic exercise, showing how well blood flows to the heart when it is working harder. Your consultant will advise which test is right for you.
How long does a cardiac MRI take?
Most cardiac MRI scans take between 30 and 60 minutes. The procedure is carried out as an outpatient appointment, and you can go home shortly afterwards.
What should I expect at my Cardiac MRI appointment?
You will be asked to lie still inside the MRI scanner, which is a large tunnel-shaped machine. The scan is painless, though the machine can be noisy, so earplugs or headphones are provided. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly while images are taken. Sometimes, a contrast dye is injected into a vein in your arm to give clearer images of your heart and blood vessels.
Is a Cardiac MRI safe?
Yes, a cardiac MRI is very safe. It does not use radiation, and most people have no side effects. If you have certain implants, pacemakers, or metal inside your body, you will need to let your care team know, as this may affect whether an MRI is suitable.
When will I get my Cardiac MRI results?
Your images will be reviewed by a cardiologist, and a full report will be securely sent to your referring GP or consultant, usually within 7 days. Your care team will discuss the findings and advise on any further steps in your treatment or management plan.
