Chest X-Ray FAQs

What is a chest X-Ray?

A chest X-ray is a painless test that uses a small dose of radiation to take images of your heart, lungs, and surrounding structures. It can show the size and outline of the heart, detect fluid around the lungs, and help identify conditions such as infection, heart failure, or lung disease.

You may need a chest X-ray if you have symptoms such as chest pain, cough, shortness of breath, or swelling in your legs. It is also commonly used to investigate suspected heart or lung conditions, monitor existing problems, or check how well treatments are working.

Most chest X-rays take just a few minutes. The appointment is quick and straightforward, and you can usually go home straight afterwards.

You will be asked to stand against an X-ray plate or lie on a table, depending on the images required. The radiographer will position you carefully and ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken. The test is completely painless.

Yes, a chest X-ray uses only a very small amount of radiation. The benefits of having the scan greatly outweigh the risks, but if you are or could be pregnant, please let the team know before your appointment.

A consultant radiologist will review your images, and a full report will be securely sent to your referring GP or consultant, usually within 7 days. Your care team will explain the results and arrange any further investigations or treatment if needed.
