Colonoscopy FAQs
What is a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a safe procedure that uses a long, flexible tube with a small camera to examine the inside of your colon (large intestine) and rectum. It helps doctors investigate symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits. This can help detect conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, or help to spot early signs of bowel cancer, ensuring you get the right treatment and care for your needs.
What happens during a colonoscopy?
During a colonoscopy, you’ll lie on your side while a flexible tube with a camera is gently guided through your rectum (bottom) and along your colon. The procedure allows doctors to carefully inspect the lining of your large intestine, remove polyps, or take small tissue samples if needed. Sedation is usually offered to make the test comfortable, and the procedure typically takes 20–40 minutes.
How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?
You’ll usually follow a special diet for one–two days before the test and take a laxative to empty your colon. Your doctor may review any medications you take, especially blood thinners, and advise if adjustments are needed. Most colonoscopies are day procedures, so you can usually go home the same day. If you’ve had sedation, arrange for someone to accompany you and stay with you until the effects wear off. Overnight stays are rarely required unless complications occur or additional treatments are needed.
Will I have pain relief during my procedure?
You may be offered a sedative to help you relax and make the procedure more comfortable, along with medicine to relax you. You may be offered gas and air for the colonoscopy procedure. Afterwards, the care team will help you with your recovery and advise on any pain relief.
Can I drive after a colonoscopy?
Driving is not recommended after having sedation. It’s important to arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you until the effects have completely worn off.
Will I have a biopsy or polyp removal?
During a colonoscopy, your doctor may take a biopsy or remove polyps, this is painless and done through the colonoscope. The sample is sent to a lab for analysis, helping your doctor make an accurate diagnosis and plan any treatment.
When will I get my results?
Your results are reviewed by a consultant gastroenterologist, and a full report is sent securely to your GP or referring clinician, usually within 7 days. Your care team will discuss any findings and recommend the next steps for treatment or ongoing monitoring.
