It helps detect narrowing or blockages in the coronary arteries that could cause chest pain (angina), breathlessness, or increase the risk of heart attack. The procedure gives your care team accurate information to plan the right treatment, whether that is medication, angioplasty, or further interventions.

Coronary Angiogram FAQs

What is a Coronary Angiogram?

A coronary angiogram is a test that uses X-ray imaging to look at the heart’s arteries. It helps doctors see whether the arteries are narrowed or blocked, which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, or increase the risk of heart attack.

You may need a coronary angiogram if you have symptoms such as chest pain (angina), breathlessness, or an abnormal heart test (like an ECG or stress test). It can also help plan treatment, such as angioplasty, stent placement, or medication.

A coronary angiogram is usually performed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with mild sedation, so you remain comfortable throughout. A small sheath is placed in an artery in your wrist or groin, which allows a thin, flexible tube (catheter) to be guided safely to your heart. A small amount of special dye is then used to highlight your coronary arteries on X-ray, helping the cardiologist see any narrowing or blockages clearly.

The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes, plus additional time for preparation and recovery. You may be asked to lie on your back for up to 4 hours after the test.

Yes, it is considered very safe when performed by experienced cardiologists in a hospital setting. Minor side effects, such as bruising or soreness at the insertion site, are common.

After a coronary angiogram, most people go home the same day or after a short overnight stay. You may have mild bruising or soreness at the insertion site, which is normal and should improve within a few days. You will be advised not to drive for 24 hours and to avoid baths or swimming for a short period, using showers instead until your insertion site has healed.

Your images are reviewed by a consultant cardiologist, and a full report is sent securely to your GP or referring clinician, usually within 7 days. Your care team will discuss any findings and recommend the next steps for treatment or ongoing monitoring.

You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you to Royal Devon Private Healthcare. Contact our Private Patient Team book a consultation.
