CT Coronary Angiograms FAQs
What is a CT Cardiac Angiogram?
A CT cardiac angiogram is a non-invasive scan that uses X-rays and contrast dye to create detailed images of your coronary arteries. It helps cardiologists see blockages, narrowings, or other structural issues and make informed treatment decisions.
Why might I need one?
You may be recommended a CT cardiac angiogram if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or other symptoms of coronary artery disease. It can also be used to assess risk, guide treatment, or monitor known heart conditions.
How do I prepare?
You may be asked to avoid caffeine and certain medications before the scan. Your cardiology team will review your medical history, check kidney function, and ensure you are safe for contrast dye. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items for the scan.
What happens during the scan?
A small IV line is inserted in your arm for contrast dye. You’ll lie on the scanner table while X-ray images of your heart are taken. The scan is painless, quick (usually 15–30 minutes), and non-invasive.
Do I need to stay in hospital?
No. CT cardiac angiograms are day-case procedures, and you can usually go home shortly after the scan.
When will I get the results?
Your cardiologist will review the images and provide results and recommendations within a few days, either at a follow-up appointment or via secure communication.
Do I need a referral?
You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you to Royal Devon Private Healthcare. Contact our Private Patient Team book a consultation.
