Exercise Tolerance Tests FAQs
What is an Exercise Tolerance Test?
An Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT), also called a treadmill test, measures how your heart responds to physical activity. While walking on a treadmill, your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored to see how your heart functions under stress. This test helps cardiologists detect heart problems, assess exercise capacity, and guide treatment safely and accurately.
Why might I need an Exercise Tolerance Test?
An Exercise Tolerance Test may be recommended if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or unexplained tiredness. It provides valuable insight into your heart’s response to exercise and helps your care team plan further tests or treatment if necessary.
How do I prepare for an Exercise Tolerance Test?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing and supportive shoes suitable for walking. Follow any instructions provided by the Private Patient Team, which may include avoiding caffeine before the test.
What can I expect at an Exercise Tolerance Test appointment?
During a private Exercise Tolerance Test (Treadmill) at Royal Devon Private Healthcare, you’ll be supported by our expert teams. On arrival, you’ll have electrodes attached to monitor your heart, along with a blood pressure cuff. The treadmill starts at a gentle pace, gradually increasing while your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored closely.
You’ll be asked to report any symptoms such as chest discomfort or dizziness, and the test will stop if necessary. After exercise, your heart’s recovery is observed before the electrodes are removed. A cardiologist then reviews the recorded data and provides a full report and follow-up advice, usually within a few days.
When will I get my Exercise Tolerance Test results?
Most patients receive a detailed report within a few days, explaining how your heart responded to exercise and highlighting any irregularities or issues. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you, answer any questions, and provide guidance on further tests, treatment options, or lifestyle recommendations if needed.
Why might I not be suitable for an Exercise Tolerance Test?
A treadmill test might not be recommended if you have a known heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or other medical issues that potentially make exercise risky. We will assess your medical history, current symptoms, and overall health to determine whether a treadmill test is safe for you.
