You’ll meet with your ophthalmology team to review your vision, and discuss treatment options. During your consultation we will explain the ICL surgery, go through any test results, confirm your diagnosis, and recommend the most suitable option for your condition and vision goals.
Procedure scheduling
You’ll meet with your ophthalmology team to review your vision, and discuss treatment options. During your consultation we will explain the ICL surgery, go through any test results, confirm your diagnosis, and recommend the most suitable option for your condition and vision goals.
Pre-assessment
Before your procedure, you’ll attend a pre-operative assessment to review your medical history, undergo necessary tests, and meet the anaesthetic team.
Procedure
ICL surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. This means you’ll be awake during the procedure but won’t feel any pain. You may see movement and changes in light but you won’t see any detail. Our experienced team, led by your consultant carries out every step with precision, for a safe procedure and a quick recovery.
Follow-up
After your treatment, you’ll have an early check-up before returning home. You’ll have a follow up appointment at 2-3 weeks to check your eye and vision. This might be in person or via remote monitoring.
Recovery and long term advice
Following ICL surgery most people will see improvements to their sight within a few days. Full recovery usually taking 4-6 weeks.
Once your ophthalmology team is satisfied that your vision is restored, your long-term care may be shared with your GP and optician, with clear guidance on when to return for hospital review.

Implantable Collamer Lens Surgery FAQs
Why have ICL surgery?
ICL surgery corrects vision problems such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism.
What is ICL surgery?
ICL surgery involves placing a micro-thin, biocompatible lens between your iris and natural lens. Unlike laser eye surgery the corneal tissue isn’t removed, making it ideal for patients who are not able to have laser procedures.
Am I suitable for ICL surgery?
ICL surgery may benefit adults if you are aged 21-45 with a stable prescription, for short-sightedness, long- sightedness or have an astigmatism. ICL surgery may be a good alternative for people with thin corneas or dry eyes which means they are not able to have laser eye surgery.
Do I need a GP or optician referral for ICL surgery?
No won’t need a GP or optician referral for private ICL surgery.
Is ICL surgery painful?
No. Your eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. You may notice a little pressure or mild discomfort afterwards, but this usually settles quickly.
What happens during ICL surgery?
ICL surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and sedation, which means you will be awake but comfortable. Your surgeon inserts the lens through a tiny incision and fits it between your iris and your natural lens.
How long does ICL surgery take?
The procedure itself usually takes only around 20-30 minutes per eye. However, please allow for a few hours at the hospital for preparation and recovery time.
How soon will I see results after ICL surgery?
Most people notice clearer vision almost immediately. Vision continues to improve over the following days and weeks as your eyes heal.
What is the recovery time after ICL surgery?
Most patients return to work and normal activities within 2-3 days. We’ll give you eye drops and clear aftercare instructions to support your recovery.
What aftercare do I need to follow after ICL surgery?
We’ll provide you with the medication and information you need post ICL surgery. This will include eye drops and an eye shield to wear at night to stop you from rubbing your eye during sleep.
There are a few things that you must avoid after surgery, including waiting 48 hours before showing or bathing, not wearing eye make-up for 1-2 weeks and no heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. All these things make sure your vision returns quickly and fully.
At our follow-up appointments we will check your progress and vision to make sure you stay on track.
