Loop Recorder Implantation FAQs

What is a Loop Recorder?

A loop recorder is a small device placed under the skin of the chest to monitor heart rhythms over an extended period. It helps detect arrhythmias that may not appear on short-term ECGs or other tests.

You may be recommended a loop recorder if you experience unexplained fainting, palpitations, or other irregular heart rhythms that haven’t been captured on routine monitoring.

Loop recorder insertion is usually performed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with mild sedation to keep you comfortable. A small incision is made in the chest, and the device is placed just under the skin. The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes, and you are closely monitored throughout. Most people go home the same day, and mild bruising or soreness at the insertion site is normal.

Most patients can go home the same day. Mild soreness is common, and you should avoid strenuous activity, swimming, or baths for a short period. Your cardiology team will provide clear instructions for care and follow-up.

The loop recorder continuously monitors your heart rhythm, and the data is reviewed by your cardiologist. Your care team will discuss any findings and recommend treatment or further monitoring as needed.
