MRI Scans FAQs

What is an MRI scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe and painless test that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. It helps doctors diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting bones, joints, organs, and soft tissues.

Yes. To book a private MRI scan, you’ll usually need a referral from a GP, consultant, or physiotherapist They will also talk you through the results. This ensures the correct type of scan is arranged and that your results can be interpreted in the right clinical context.

Private MRI scans are usually available within 14 days, depending on availability. We also offer evening and weekend appointments for extra convenience.

Most MRI scans take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body being examined. You’ll be asked to lie still inside the scanner while images are taken.

Yes. MRI scans do not use radiation, making them very safe. However, because the scanner uses strong magnets, you’ll be asked about metal implants, pacemakers, or other medical devices before your scan.

Some people feel anxious in the MRI scanner because it is a narrow space. Our staff are trained to support you and can provide earplugs, headphones, or even mild sedation in some cases to help you relax.

Your scan images will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist, and results are usually available within 7–10 working days. These will be sent to the referring clinician, who will discuss them with you.

MRI scans are commonly used to investigate:

  • Back, neck, and joint problems (knee, shoulder, hip, spine).
  • Sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Abdominal, pelvic, and soft tissue conditions.
  • Follow-up after previous surgery or treatment.

Your consultant or GP referral will confirm which scan is required. All prices include radiologist reporting.

  • Part of the NHS, with the reassurance of nationally recognised standards.
  • Access to leading consultant radiologists and advanced imaging facilities.
  • Patient-centred care, with support before, during, and after your scan.
  • Revenues from private patients are reinvested into our NHS services, supporting local healthcare.

If you’re looking for a private MRI scan in the UK without long waits, choose Royal Devon Private Healthcare. Our team is here to make your diagnostic journey faster, smoother, and is backed by NHS expertise.
