What's included

One-to-one consultation

You’ll meet with one of our experienced consultant ENT surgeons to review your child’s medical history, any previous illnesses, and relevant scan or test results. Your consultant will explain the private paediatric adenoidectomy procedure, answer your questions, and confirm a personalised treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.

Procedure scheduling

Once the treatment plan is agreed, our team will schedule the surgery at a convenient time for you. We aim to minimise waiting times while maintaining NHS-level standards, giving your child fast access to safe, private surgical care.

Pre-assessment

Before the operation, your child will attend a pre-operative assessment where their medical history is reviewed and any necessary tests, such as blood tests, are completed. You’ll also meet the anaesthetic team to ensure your child is fully prepared.

Procedure

Adenoidectomy is carried out under general anaesthetic, so your child will be fully asleep and unaware throughout the operation. The procedure usually takes around 20–40 minutes, and you can accompany your child to theatre and stay with them until they are comfortably asleep.

During the operation, the surgeon gently removes the adenoids through the mouth, meaning no cuts or stitches are needed on the outside. This safe and careful approach helps improve breathing, reduces infections, and supports a smooth recovery. Your child is closely monitored by the surgical and anaesthetic team at every step.

Follow-up

Most children are able to go home the same day after an adenoidectomy, though some may stay overnight for observation. Mild sore throat, a blocked or runny nose, or snoring in the first few days is normal and usually settles quickly.

Paediatric Adenoidectomy FAQs

What is private paediatric adenoidectomy surgery?

Private paediatric adenoidectomy, sometimes called adenoid removal, is a safe operation where the adenoids (small glands at the back of the nose) are carefully removed under general anaesthetic. The procedure is performed entirely through the mouth, so there are no external cuts or stitches. Removing enlarged adenoids can ease a blocked nose in children, reduce recurring infections, and improve breathing, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

Adenoid removal may be recommended if your child has a constant blocked or runny nose, mouth breathing, snoring or sleep disturbance, repeated ear infections or glue ear, or frequent sinus problems. Enlarged adenoids can have a big impact on daily life, affecting sleep quality, hearing, and concentration.

Parents can contact our Private Patient team directly to arrange an appointment however a referral from your GP can be useful if your child has already had tests.

Most children do not need scans or imaging before adenoid removal. In some cases, simple checks such as a hearing test or nasal examination may be recommended to support the treatment plan. Your consultant will explain if any additional investigations are necessary.

Yes, in some cases adenoid removal is carried out at the same time as a tonsillectomy. This combined procedure is called an adenotonsillectomy and may be recommended if your child has both enlarged adenoids and troublesome tonsils. If needed, grommet surgery to treat glue ear can also be performed during the same operation. Your consultant ENT surgeon will discuss the best approach for your child based on their individual symptoms and medical history.

Before the operation, you and your child will be invited to attend a pre-operative appointment. This is an opportunity to meet members of the paediatric ENT team, ask questions, and understand what will happen on the day of surgery. You will also receive clear advice on how to prepare your child, including when to stop food and drink, how to manage any medicines, and ways to help them feel calm and reassured.

Adenoidectomy is carried out under general anaesthetic, so your child will be fully asleep and unaware during the procedure. The surgeon gently removes the adenoids through the mouth using specialist instruments. The operation usually takes around 20 to 40 minutes, and your child is carefully monitored by the surgical and anaesthetic team at every stage.

Most children go home the same day as their adenoidectomy. Occasionally, an overnight stay is recommended, particularly if your child is very young, has other health needs, or requires extra observation. Your care team will explain exactly what to expect and ensure you feel fully supported before going home.

After adenoid surgery, rest, fluids, and soft foods will help your child recover comfortably. It is normal for them to have a mild sore throat, a blocked nose, or some snoring in the first few days, and this usually settles quickly. You will be given guidance on pain relief and aftercare, and most children are ready to return to school and everyday activities within about a week.
