What's included
One-to-one consultation
You’ll meet with one of our experienced consultant ENT surgeons to review your child’s medical history, any previous illnesses, and relevant scan or test results. Your consultant will explain the private paediatric adenotonsillectomy procedure, answer your questions, and confirm a personalised treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.
Procedure scheduling
Once the treatment plan is agreed, our team will schedule the surgery at a convenient time for you. We aim to minimise waiting times while maintaining NHS-level standards, giving your child fast access to safe, private surgical care.
Pre-assessment
Before the operation, your child will attend a pre-operative assessment where their medical history is reviewed and any necessary tests, such as blood tests, are completed. You’ll also meet the anaesthetic team to ensure your child is fully prepared
Procedure
During a paediatric adenotonsillectomy, your child will be fully asleep under general anaesthetic, ensuring they feel no pain or discomfort during the operation. The surgeon carefully removes both the tonsils and adenoids through the mouth, meaning there are no external cuts or stitches. The procedure usually takes around 30–60 minutes, and your child is closely monitored by the surgical and anaesthetic team at every stage.
Follow-up
Most children are able to go home on the same day, although a short overnight stay may occasionally be recommended depending on your child’s age or medical needs. Mild sore throat, a blocked or runny nose, or temporary snoring is normal in the first few days. You will receive clear guidance on pain relief, fluids, diet, and gradually returning to normal activities.

Paediatric Adenotonsillectomy FAQs
What is private paediatric adenotonsillectomy?
Private paediatric adenotonsillectomy is a safe procedure in which a child’s tonsils and adenoids are carefully removed under general anaesthetic. The operation is performed entirely through the mouth, so there are no external cuts or stitches. Adenotonsillectomy can improve breathing, reduce infections, support better sleep, and help your child return to school and everyday activities more comfortably.
Why might my child need this surgery?
Adenotonsillectomy may be recommended for children who have frequent throat infections, persistent nasal blockage, snoring or sleep-related breathing problems, or repeated ear infections. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can affect sleep, hearing, concentration, and overall wellbeing. Your consultant ENT surgeon will review your child’s symptoms and health history to determine whether adenotonsillectomy is the most appropriate treatment.
Will they need a GP referral?
Parents can contact our Private Patient team directly to arrange an appointment however a referral from your GP can be useful if your child has already had tests.
Will my child need any tests or scans?
Most children do not need scans or imaging before adenotonsillectomy removal. In some cases, simple checks such as a hearing test or nasal examination may be recommended to support the treatment plan. Your consultant will explain if any additional investigations are necessary.
Can my child have grommets at the same time?
In some cases, grommet surgery to treat glue ear can also be performed during the same operation if necessary. Your consultant will discuss the most suitable approach for your child.
How will you help my child prepare for surgery?
Before the operation, you and your child will be invited to attend a pre-operative appointment. This is an opportunity to meet members of the paediatric ENT team, ask questions, and understand what will happen on the day of surgery. You will also receive clear advice on how to prepare your child, including when to stop food and drink, how to manage any medicines, and ways to help them feel calm and reassured.
What happens during the operation?
The surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic, so your child will be completely asleep and unaware during the operation. The surgeon removes the tonsils and adenoids through the mouth using specialist instruments, and the anaesthetic and surgical teams monitor your child closely throughout. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Will my child need to stay overnight in hospital?
Most children go home the same day as their surgery. Occasionally, an overnight stay is recommended, particularly if your child is very young, has other health needs, or requires extra observation. Your care team will explain exactly what to expect and ensure you feel fully supported before going home.
What can I do to support my child’s recovery?
After surgery, rest, fluids, and soft foods will help your child recover comfortably. Mild sore throat, blocked nose, or temporary snoring is normal in the first few days. You will be given guidance on pain relief, diet, and returning to normal activities. Most children are able to return to school and regular play within one to two weeks.
