What's included

One-to-one consultation

You’ll meet with ophthalmology team to review your vision, and discuss treatment options. During your consultation we will explain the YAG laser treatment, go through any test results, confirm your diagnosis, and recommend the most suitable option your condition and vision.

Procedure scheduling

Once your treatment plan is confirmed, our team will usually be able to perform the outpatient procedure on the same day, this will typically take less than 5 minutes per eye. We aim to reduce waiting times while maintaining NHS-level standards of care, ensuring you can access private YAG laser eye treatment quickly and safely.

Pre-assessment

Before your procedure, you’ll attend a pre-operative assessment to conduct a full examination of your eye and ophthalmic history.

Procedure

YAG laser treatment is usually carried out with anaesthetic eye drops. During the procedure you’ll be sitting up in a chair with your head comfortably placed on a chin rest.  You may see  bright light and hear clicking noises but you won’t feel any pain. Our experienced team, led by your consultant carries out every step with precision, for a safe procedure and a quick recovery.

Recovery

Following YAG laser treatment most people will see improvements to their sight by the very next day.

Once your ophthalmology team is satisfied that your vision is restored, your long-term care may be shared with your GP and optician, with clear guidance on when to return for hospital review.

YAG Laser Treatment (Capsulotomy) FAQs

What is YAG laser eye treatment?

After cataract surgery, the thin membrane (capsule) that holds your new lens can become cloudy, causing blurred vision and glare.

YAG laser treatment uses a precise, painless laser to create a small opening in this capsule, allowing light to pass through normally again.

No won’t need a GP or optician referral for YAG laser eye treatment.

No. Your eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. You may notice some flashes of light but you won’t experience any discomfort.

YAG laser eye treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, which means you will be awake but comfortable. Your surgeon creates a tiny opening in the clouded capsule using a very precise YAG laser.

The procedure itself usually takes only around 5-10 minutes per eye. However, please allow for a few hours at the hospital for preparation and recovery time.

Most people notice clearer vision within a few hours.  Your vision will continue to improve over the following weeks as your eyes heal.

Most patients return to work and normal activities within 2-3 days. We’ll give you eye drops and clear aftercare instructions to support your recovery.

We’ll provide you with the medication and information you need post laser eye surgery. This will include eye drops and an eye shield to wear at night to stop you from rubbing your eye during sleep.

There are a few things that you must avoid after surgery, including waiting 48 hours before showing or bathing, not bending over for 1-2 weeks and no heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. All these things make sure your vision returns quickly and fully.

At our follow-up appointments we will check your progress and vision to make sure you stay on track.

You must be able to meet the DVLA standards, which is reading a number plate from a distance of 20 meters before you can drive.  Generally, it can take a few days before your vision has settled for you to be able to drive.

Generally, you should be able to return to work as soon as your vision has improved.
