What's Included

One-to-One Consultation

You’ll meet with one of our consultant ophthalmologists to review your vision, assess your scans, and confirm the diagnosis of wet AMD. Your consultant will explain the injection procedure, outline the treatment schedule, and answer any questions about outcomes and ongoing monitoring.

Pre-Assessment

Before your first injection, you’ll have a pre-treatment assessment to review your medical history and complete any necessary imaging tests, such as OCT (optical coherence tomography) and, if required, fluorescein angiography to check the blood vessels in your retina.

Procedure Scheduling

Once your plan is confirmed, we’ll schedule your first injection as soon as possible – it might be possible for this to be during your consultation, but if not it is typically within 1-2 weeks. Most patients will need a course of monthly injections at first, followed by a tailored maintenance schedule.

Procedure

Anti-VEGF injections are given in a clean treatment room under local anaesthetic eye drops. The eye is numbed so you will not feel pain. Your consultant gently places a very fine needle into the white of the eye to deliver the medicine, which targets abnormal blood vessel growth in the macula. The procedure usually takes just a few minutes.

Initial Recovery and Follow-Up

You can usually go home shortly after the injection. Mild irritation, watering, or a “gritty” feeling is normal for a day or two. You’ll return for regular follow-up appointments to monitor your vision and macula health, usually with OCT scans to guide further injections.

Recovery

Most people return to normal activities the same day and your vision is often stable within days.  However, ongoing injections may be needed to maintain results. Your consultant will provide a clear plan for long-term follow-up and maintenance treatment.

Macular Degeneration (AMD) Treatment FAQs

What Is Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Wet AMD is an eye condition where abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula – the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. These vessels leak fluid or blood, causing rapid vision loss if untreated.

The main treatment is regular injections of anti-VEGF medication into the eye. This medicine blocks a protein that causes abnormal blood vessel growth, helping to stabilise or improve vision.

No won’t need a GP or optician referral for private wet AMD treatment.

No. Anaesthetic eye drops numb the eye, so most people only feel slight pressure or a mild scratch for a few seconds.

The injection itself takes just a few minutes, but allow about an hour for preparation and aftercare.

Many people find their vision stabilises within a few days or weeks. Some experience gradual improvement, but the main goal is to prevent further sight loss.

Most patients start with monthly injections for three months, followed by a personalised maintenance plan based on regular scans and eye checks.

You may experience mild redness, watering, or a gritty feeling and this usually settle within 24-48 hours. Serious complications such as infection or retinal detachment are rare.

Yes, if you already wear glasses for reading or distance. Anti-VEGF treatment stabilises your macula but does not replace the need for glasses.

No. Wet AMD is a long-term condition. Regular monitoring and ongoing injections are often required to keep it under control.
