Robotic hip replacement. He is currently Chief Investigator of the HIPSTER study, a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) study, looking at the effect on patient outcome of tendon preservation after robotic assisted hip replacement surgery.

Biography

Mr Al-Amin Kassam is an experienced consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in Exeter. He is also co-Clinical Lead at the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (SWAOC) and has been appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter.

In 2005, Mr Kassam received his medical qualification from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine. This was followed with Mr Kassam’s basic surgical training at both Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Exeter. He then undertook higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the South West Peninsula region. During this time, Mr Kassam was working in Exeter, Plymouth, and Torbay.

Mr Kassam was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016, then subsequently commenced the prestigious complex and revision hip and knee fellowship with a special interest in bone and joint infections at the internationally renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

When Mr Kassam returned to Exeter, he became a Ling fellow with The Exeter Hip Unit in 2017. He was then appointed as a consultant in 2018, where he also specialises in complex and revision hip arthroplasty.

Medical leadership is a passion of Mr Kassam’s. The British Orthopaedic Association awarded him a place on the Clinical Leaders Programme, and the Chartered Management Institute has awarded him a Level 7 certificate in Leadership and Management.
