Biography

Mr Douglas Ferguson attended St George’s University of London, in 1990 was awarded BSc (Hons) and completed MBBS, with merits, in 1993. He was awarded FRCS (Eng) in 1997 and trained in many of the South’s premier breast cancer centres and plastic surgery depts. As well as training in a plastic surgery centre in Australia, he completed a National TiG Oncoplastic Breast Surgical Fellowship in 2004 and in 2005 gained both a Master’s degree in Surgery and the National (UK and Ireland) Gold medal for the final surgical fellowship examination FRCS(GenSurg).

He was appointed Exeter’s first Oncoplastic Surgeon in 2006, having worked in specialist breast surgery since 1995 and was Clinical Lead  from 2009 until 2021, developing an accredited Oncoplastic centre of excellence in Exeter, with National TiG Fellow Host status and was the National Association Breast Surgery (ABS) TiG rep. He was an invited Specialist Advisor to several Trusts to support breast surgery development. He completed a PGCert in medical education 2018.

Mr Ferguson established and convened several Breast Oncoplastic Courses, organising faculty, facilities and finances with industry partners to ensure competitive pricing. Mr Ferguson is Faculty for MS Oncoplastic Surgery, ABS courses portfolio. He is a University of Exeter Hon Associate Professor for teaching/ research and has supervised a successful MD student. He is the Prime Investigator for around 15 NCRN clinical trials. He has chaired sessions at ABS and World breast cancer conferences and been on the organising committee of both.

His current roles at the Royal Devon (RD) and nationally include: Clinical MDT Lead Breast. He is the Association of Breast Surgery Hon Treasurer from 2020 until 2025. He is a University Representative for RD and Royal College Representative for Consultant Appointment Committees and is also a Peninsular Doctors’ Mentor. As a result, Mr Ferguson is Nationally and Internationally recognised as an authoritative expert in his field of Breast Surgery as well as being compassionate and caring in his approach and has worked in Private Practice since 2006.

Research- Bachelors and Masters degrees in breast  disease research; research active with University of Exeter in breast diagnostics and prime Investigator of 15 clinical research trials.
