Biography

Mr Harry W Roberts is a nationally recognised consultant ophthalmologist with sub-specialist expertise in cataract and corneal surgery. He is based at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the corneal service and is Cataract Lead at the Nightingale Hospital. He also holds a number of senior academic roles including Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Specialty Lead for Ophthalmology at the University of Exeter Medical School, and Sustainability Fellow at the NIHR-funded HealthTech Research Centre in Exeter. He serves as Regional Specialty Lead for the NIHR Research Delivery Network in the South West.

He graduated with distinction from the University of Birmingham and completed further postgraduate training at King’s College London, where he earned an MD(Res) focusing on the integration of femtosecond laser technology into NHS cataract services. He has also completed fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Southend University Hospital. Dr Roberts was awarded the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Harcourt Medal for achieving the highest national mark in the Fellowship examination.

Mr Roberts is considered a UK key opinion leader in cataract surgery, and several of his innovations have been showcased by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, delivered invited lectures nationally and internationally, and co-authored the textbook Current Clinical Evidence in Ophthalmology. He leads a corneal fellowship programme in Exeter and remains committed to surgical training, innovation, and sustainable service delivery.
