Echocardiograms FAQs

What Is An Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram, also known as “echo,” is a type of heart scan that uses ultrasound to create moving images of your heart. It is a great way for cardiologists to look at your heart’s structure, function, and blood flow, helping detect conditions such as valve problems, heart failure, or irregular heart rhythms. An echocardiogram is quick, pain-free, and provides fast answers to guide your diagnosis and treatment.

You might need an echocardiogram if you have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, or swelling in your legs. It can also help investigate a heart murmur, monitor existing heart conditions, or assess your heart after a heart attack or other cardiac event.

Echocardiograms usually take about 20-40 minutes as an outpatient appointment. The results will then be sent to your GP or care team who referred you.

You will be asked to lie down on an examination bench while a warm gel is applied to your chest. A small ultrasound probe is then moved across your chest to capture detailed images of your heart in real time. You may be asked to change position briefly so your cardiologist can get the clearest view of your heart’s structure and function.

In some cases, your heart may be monitored under stress using medication or light exercise to see how it responds. This is called a stress echocardiogram and a member of our team will explain if this is necessary for your individual assessment.

A full report is usually reviewed by a cardiologist within a few days. Your care team will explain the findings, discuss any next steps, and provide recommendations for treatment or further tests if needed.

You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you to Royal Devon Private Healthcare. Contact our Private Patient Team book a consultation.
