Holter Monitor tests FAQs
What is a Holter Monitor?
A Holter Monitor is a small, portable device you wear at home that records your heart’s activity continuously over a day or more. It helps cardiologists spot irregular heartbeats, monitor palpitations, and detect heart rhythm problems that may not show up during a standard ECG in the clinic. This simple, non-invasive test provides valuable information to guide diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions.
Why might I need a Holter Monitor?
A Holter Monitor can provide a detailed picture of your heart’s activity over time. It is especially useful if you have symptoms that come and go, such as palpitations, skipped heart beats, or unexplained tiredness that may not get picked up during a short ECG. Wearing the monitor at home allows your are team to detect hidden heart rhythm issues and make informed decisions about your care.
Do I need a referral?
You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you to Royal Devon Private Healthcare. Contact our Private Patient Team book a consultation.
How long do I need to wear the Holter Monitor?
After your fitting appointment, you’ll wear the monitor at home for the prescribed period, usually 24-48 hours. When the test is complete, you simply return the device to the hospital or clinic, either in person or by pre-arranged collection. A cardiologist will then review the recorded data and provide a report and follow-up advice based on your results.
Do I need to change or avoid my usual activity during a Holter Monitor test?
No major changes are usually required. You should carry on with your normal daily routine so the monitor records your heart under typical conditions. Avoid getting the device wet (e.g., no bathing or swimming) and follow any instructions given by the clinic. Note any symptoms or unusual activity in the diary provided, as this helps your cardiologist accurately interpret the results.
When will I get my Holter Monitor test results?
After you return the Holter Monitor, the recorded data is reviewed by a cardiologist or qualified clinician. Most patients receive a detailed report within a few days, which explains any irregular heart rhythms or other findings. Your doctor or care team will then discuss the results with you and recommend any further tests, treatment, or lifestyle advice if needed.
