ECG FAQs

What is an ECG?

An ECG, or electrocardiogram, is a safe, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms, and legs to track how your heart is beating. This information helps detect rhythm problems (arrhythmias), the effects of medications, or early signs of heart disease.

You may need an ECG if you’ve had symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath. ECGs are also used to check the heart before operations, monitor ongoing heart conditions, or assess how well treatments are working.

Most ECGs take just 5–10 minutes and are carried out as an outpatient appointment. There’s no recovery time, and you’ll be able to go home straight after your test.

You’ll be asked to lie down while a number of small, sticky sensors are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. Wires connect the sensors to a recording machine, which tracks your heart’s activity. The test is completely pain-free. Sometimes, you may have a longer recording called an ambulatory (24-hour) ECG, which uses a small portable device you take home to monitor your heart over a full day.

Your test results are analysed by a cardiologist and sent securely to your referring GP or consultant, usually within 7 days. Your care team will explain the findings and whether any further tests or treatments are needed.
