His practice centres on all aspects of general cardiology including heart failure, lipid management, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and valvular heart disease. He is interested in preventative cardiology, and its role in reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in the wider population. He undertakes invasive coronary angiography as well as non-invasive CT coronary angiography (Level 2 Clinical Practitioner in Cardiac CT Accreditation, British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging).
Biography
Dr Dushen Tharmaratnam has been a Consultant Cardiologist at North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple since October 2012, prior to which he undertook a two year research post at London Chest Hospital/Queen Mary University Hospital. His specialist registrar training in Cardiology involved rotations at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro and at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth but he has also experienced cardiology training at 3 other tertiary centres: Bristol Royal Infirmary, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. He graduated from the University of Bristol Medical School in 1998 and gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, London in 2002 and was conferred Fellowship status in 2018.
He is currently the British Cardiovascular Society/Royal College of Physician’s Regional Specialty Adviser for Cardiology (Peninsula region) and is College Tutor for Internal Medicine Training at North Devon District Hospital.
